Writing about something meaningful

For one of my supplement essays, I need to write about something that's meaningful to me and why. I feel like the generic answers would be family, friends, etc. Should I go for that or focus on some unique experience I've had instead?

It's definitely a good idea to avoid generic answers in your supplemental essay, as adcoms will have read hundreds, if not thousands, of essays with similar themes. The key to writing a successful essay is to make it personal and ensure it stands out. Instead of focusing on a broad topic, like family or friends, try to write about a unique experience or a specific aspect that is meaningful to you.

For example, if you choose to write about a family member, focus on a particular moment or event in your relationship that has heavily influenced you—maybe a game you play with your dad on road trips or a family recipe your great grandma taught you. Use this event to reveal your growth, values, or perspective. By doing so, you will create a more engaging and memorable essay that the admissions officers will appreciate.

Similarly, if you decide to write about an experience, make sure it is distinctive and tells the reader something important about you. Consider instances where you faced a challenge, discovered your passions or interests, or took on a leadership role within a community.

Ultimately, whatever topic you choose, your essay should reflect who you are and what you value. Remember to infuse the essay with your voice and unique perspective to ensure it stands out among the many applications that admissions officers review.
