Race and ethnicity on college application?

Hello! When filling out college applications, there's a section about race and ethnicity. My background is Latino, but I noticed that there isn't a specific box for it on some apps. Should I select 'Hispanic/Latino', or should I choose another option? I want to make sure I'm being accurate in my application. Thanks!

Hello! In college applications, you should definitely represent your true background as accurately as possible. If you identify as Latino, you should select 'Hispanic/Latino' if there's an option available. This will help the admissions officers understand your unique cultural background, which can sometimes provide context to your life experiences and circumstances you may discuss in other parts of your application.

On the off chance an application does not have a specific option for 'Hispanic/Latino', look for an option that best represents your ethnicity (e.g., 'Mexican', 'Puerto Rican', etc.), or you might find a box labeled 'Other' with space to specify your ethnicity. In this case, feel free to write in 'Latino' or another term that accurately represents your ethnicity.

Accurately presenting your ethnic background in your application can help the admissions office get a clearer picture of who you are as a person and your unique perspective. Best of luck with your applications!
