University of Michigan LSA First Year vs Residential College

I've been accepted to UMich, but I'm undecided between LSA and the Residential College. What are the main differences between these two programs? I'm curious about the academic and housing opportunities, plus the overall campus experience each program offers. Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your acceptance to UMich! The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) and the Residential College (RC) are both great options, but they do offer different experiences.

Academically, LSA is the largest college on campus and offers a wide array of majors and courses across various disciplines. You'll have greater flexibility in course selection, but some classes can be larger, which might make it harder to connect with professors.

On the other hand, the RC is a smaller, more intimate liberal arts community within LSA. It emphasizes a close-knit, interdisciplinary environment and offers smaller class sizes, which allows for more personalized interactions with faculty. The RC has its own curriculum, which includes unique courses, language requirements, and experiential learning opportunities, like theater and arts programs.

As for housing, LSA students typically live in one of several residence halls on campus. Some LSA students choose to live in specific Learning Communities where a group of students with shared interests live together, such as the Honors Program or the Lloyd Scholars Program for Writing and the Arts.

RC students live together in East Quad, a residence hall that's also home to the RC offices, classrooms, and arts facilities. It's a tight-knit community where students often form lasting friendships. Living in East Quad makes it easy to engage with academic resources and participate in various events, which might make campus feel more welcoming.

Overall campus experience varies depending on your preferences. LSA provides a comprehensive university experience, exposure to a diverse mix of students, and opportunities to engage with a wider array of clubs and activities. On the other hand, the RC offers an interdisciplinary, tight-knit community that emphasizes collaborative learning and fosters close relationships with faculty members. Ultimately, your choice should be based on your personal preferences for class size, curriculum, and living environment.

Whichever path you choose, you'll still be part of the larger UMich community and have access to all its resources, including research opportunities, networking, and campus events. Good luck with your decision!
