Thoughts on NSHSS?

So I just got an invitation to join the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), but I've heard some mixed reviews about it. Can anyone who's been a member share their experiences? Is it worth joining, or should I just pass?

Hey there! It's true that the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) has received mixed reviews, and I'll try to give you a clearer picture. In general, NSHSS is not considered very prestigious or impressive by college admissions officers. This is mainly because it's a "pay-to-play" organization, meaning anyone can join as long as they meet the fairly lenient academic requirements and pay the membership fee. As a result, it doesn't really hold much weight in the college admissions process.

Many students who join might not find the membership benefits particularly useful, such as the scholarships or events offered. If you're looking for an organization to boost your college applications, it's a good idea to focus on more selective or distinguished extracurricular activities like specialized clubs, state or national competitions, or programs that demonstrate your leadership skills.

That being said, if you're interested in potentially connecting with other high-achieving students and don't mind the membership fee, then joining NSHSS might be a worthwhile experience for you. Just keep in mind that it most likely won't stand out as a strong point in your application. It's up to you to weigh the pros and cons and decide whether it's the right fit for you! Good luck!
