BYU vs MSU: Stuck between the two

I've been accepted to both Brigham Young University (BYU) and Michigan State University (MSU), but I can't seem to make up my mind. What are the differences between these two universities in terms of academic quality, social life, and opportunities after graduation? Thanks for any help!

Congratulations on your acceptances! Both universities have distinctive features, so let me break down their differences in terms of academic quality, social life, and opportunities after graduation to help you with your decision-making process.

Academic Quality:

BYU is a private university with strong emphasis on undergraduate teaching and a predominantly LDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) student population. Academics at BYU are generally rigorous, and the school has a strong reputation, particularly in business, engineering, and the performing arts. In addition, the religious affiliation results in a very supportive and wholesome learning environment with small class sizes, allowing for more personalized attention from professors.

MSU, on the other hand, is a large public research university known for its programs in business, engineering, and communications, as well as having strong science and agriculture-focused offerings. It is a member of the Big Ten Conference, so you’ll find a lot of resources on campus, and there are numerous opportunities for undergraduate research. The bigger size may lead to larger class sizes in some introductory courses, but smaller class sizes in upper-level courses.

Social Life:

BYU has a unique social environment rooted in its religious foundations, with strict adherence to an honor code that promotes a clean-living, substance-free atmosphere. You'll find plenty of outdoor activities, clubs, and religious-based organizations for students to engage with. However, be aware that your social life may revolve around religion and if you're not an LDS member, it may feel limiting.

MSU's social life is more typical of a large university, featuring diverse clubs, athletics, Greek life, and a strong emphasis on campus traditions. You will likely find a wider variety of experiences and social atmospheres at MSU. East Lansing is a college town that offers various activities, including access to local dining, music, and cultural events.

Opportunities after Graduation:

Both universities have strong alumni networks, which can lead to internship and job opportunities after graduation. BYU alumni connections are often rooted in the LDS community and have strong ties to Utah and the Western U.S., but their network extends nationwide and even globally. MSU's Spartan alumni network is recognized regionally (mostly around the Midwest) and connects graduates with professionals across various industries.

Ultimately, your choice will depend on the factors that you prioritize and which university's atmosphere and programs align better with your personal, academic, and career goals. Good luck with your decision!
