UIUC Computer Engineering Acceptance Rate?

Hi there! I'm considering applying to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for computer engineering. Did anybody here apply to UIUC for computer engineering? If so, what was the acceptance rate like? Am I going to need a super high GPA and test scores?

Hi! Although UIUC does not publish specific acceptance rates for the Computer Engineering program specifically, its overall engineering acceptance rate is around 30-40%. However, given that Computer Engineering is a popular and competitive major, the acceptance rate is likely slightly lower for that specific program—maybe around 25%.

In terms of GPA and test scores, UIUC's College of Engineering tends to have more stringent requirements than other, less competitive majors within the university. To have a competitive application, aim for a high GPA of around 3.8 or higher (unweighted, on a 4.0 scale). A high number of advanced courses, such as AP or IB, in relevant subjects like calculus, physics, and computer science will also be important, as a slightly lower GPA earned in advanced courses often impresses more than a higher one without challenging classes.

Additionally, while UIUC is test-optional, when you’re applying to a competitive program, you typically want to put as many gold stars as possible on your application. So, you should probably still plan on investing time and energy into preparing for the SAT or ACT, so that you can achieve a high score. Finally, GPA and test scores are important, don't forget that UIUC also considers your extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendation letters. Involvement in STEM-related activities like robotics clubs, coding competitions or internships will be beneficial to your application, as well as strong essays that showcase your passion for Computer Engineering. If you want advice on how to successfully tackle UIUC’s supplemental essay prompts, you can find a breakdown of each one on CollegeVine’s blog: https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-write-the-university-of-illinois-at-urbana-champaign-essays.

Best of luck with your application to UIUC!
