How competitive is the PROMYS summer program?

Hello! I've been considering the PROMYS summer program as an option to spend my vacation productively while improving my math skills. I was wondering if anyone knows how competitive it is to get into this program. Also, does anyone have any tips on making my application stand out?

PROMYS (Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists) is a highly competitive summer program for high school students who are passionate about mathematics and want to deeply explore the subject. It takes place at Boston University and attracts talented students from across the country and even internationally.

Unsurprisingly, the program is selective, admitting around 80 participants each year. Successful applicants generally have a strong background in mathematics, including high grades in challenging math classes and solid performances in math competitions. Demonstrating your passion for math and your willingness to explore advanced topics will give you an edge during the application process.

To make your application stand out, consider the following tips:

1. Emphasize your math skills and experience: Showcase your accomplishments in math, such as participating in competitions, attending math clubs, taking advanced courses, or even pursuing self-driven mathematics projects in your own time. This should be done both in your application and in your recommendation letters.

2. Express your genuine curiosity and love for math: Use the essay portion of the application to convey your enthusiasm for mathematics, as well as your desire to learn complex topics and collaborate with others who share the same passion.

3. Obtain strong letters of recommendation: Request letters from teachers or mentors who can speak to your mathematical abilities, work ethic, and passion for learning. Choose recommenders who can give detailed examples of your math-related accomplishments and potential for growth.

4. Prepare thoughtfully for the problem set: Spend adequate time working through the application problem set. The problems will be challenging, as they're designed to evaluate your ability to think creatively and apply mathematical concepts at a high level. Show your work clearly, and provide explanations for your solutions when possible.

By showcasing your achievements in mathematics and conveying your passion for learning and exploring mathematical concepts, you will improve your chances of being accepted into the PROMYS program. Best of luck with your application!
