Priority waitlist – what does it mean?

I just found out I'm on a priority waitlist at one of my top schools. Can someone explain the difference between the regular waitlist and a priority waitlist? How does it work and how much does it actually affect my chance of getting accepted?

Congratulations on being placed on the priority waitlist! A priority waitlist is different from a regular waitlist in that it typically represents a smaller group of applicants who the admissions committee is more likely to admit if additional spots become available. Essentially, you're among the first few students who will be considered for open spots, should any become available after the initial acceptances and enrollments.

While there is no guarantee of admission from the priority waitlist, your chances are indeed higher compared to those on the regular waitlist. However, it's essential to understand that the number of students admitted from the waitlist, priority or otherwise, can greatly vary from year to year based on multiple factors such as the yield rate and class size.

To maximize your chances of being accepted, it's wise to show your continued interest in attending the school. You can do this by sending a letter of continued interest (LOCI), where you update the school about any recent achievements, activities, or awards, and reiterate your enthusiasm for the college. Additionally, make sure to respond to any requests or updates from the college in a timely manner.

At the same time, it's important to have a backup plan in place. Please ensure that you have confirmed your spot at another school where you've been accepted, since there's no guarantee you will be admitted off the waitlist, even the priority one.

To sum up, while being on the priority waitlist does increase your chances of acceptance compared to the regular waitlist, there are many uncontrollable variables that can determine the actual outcome. Make sure to express your continued interest in the school, but also be prepared with other options in case you don't get admitted off the waitlist. Good luck!
