Hi everyone! I recently started looking into college apps and keep seeing the term 'intended major.' Can someone explain to me what that means and do I need to decide on one before applying?
Hi! An intended major is the subject area you plan to focus on during your college years, leading to a degree in that area. Essentially, it's the main topic you want to study in-depth. When you're applying to colleges, you'll often be asked to indicate your intended major, but this doesn't mean you're locked into that choice.
Most colleges allow students to change their major throughout their first two years since many colleges require students to complete general education requirements during that time anyway. Some institution even allows you to apply as 'undecided' if you aren't sure what you want to study yet. Keep in mind, however, that applying to specific programs or highly competitive majors might require additional components or have separate deadlines.
It's a good idea to have some idea of what you'd like to study, but you don't need to have a major locked in before applying. You can use your early college years to explore different subjects, attend workshops, and consult with professors or academic advisors before deciding on a major you're truly passionate about.
Good luck with your college applications!
