CMU vs Georgia Tech: Which one is better for CS?

Hey everyone! I've been accepted to both Carnegie Mellon and Georgia Tech for computer science, and I'm having a tough time making a decision. What are the pros and cons of each school? I'm considering factors like academics, internships, campus life, and job prospects after graduation. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Congratulations on your acceptances! Both Carnegie Mellon (CMU) and Georgia Tech are excellent choices for computer science, so you can't go wrong with either one. However, they do have their differences in other ways. Here's a comparison of the two schools based on the factors you mentioned:

1. Academics: Both schools have top-notch CS programs, but they take slightly different approaches to the field. At CMU, you'll likely experience a more theory-focused curriculum, whereas Georgia Tech is known for its focus on practical applications and real-world projects. The choice here depends on your personal preference for theoretical versus practical learning.

2. Internships: Both schools have strong connections to the tech industry and offer plenty of internship opportunities. However, CMU has a slight edge, due to its proximity to major tech hubs like New York and Boston. Georgia Tech, however, may better connect you with opportunities in Atlanta and the Southeast, so if you see yourself settling in that area immediately after graduation, that could be a factor to consider.

3. Campus Life: Georgia Tech has a larger and more diverse student body, which can provide you with a richer campus life experience, as you’ll be able to learn plenty from your peers on top of what you study in class. The weather in Atlanta is also generally warmer and more pleasant than in Pittsburgh. On the other hand, if you prefer a smaller, closely-knit community, you may appreciate CMU's intimate atmosphere. Socially, both schools have plenty of clubs and activities, but Georgia Tech has a larger Greek life presence, if that's important to you.

4. Job Prospects: Graduates from both schools are highly sought after by top tech companies. CMU might have a slight edge in terms of name recognition and prestige, but the difference is minimal. The biggest factor in your job prospects will be your individual skills, projects, and internships, which you can acquire at either institution.

Ultimately, the choice comes down to your personal preferences and the environment in which you feel you'd thrive. It may be helpful to visit both campuses (if possible) and speak with current students to get a better feel for what resonates with you. Good luck with your decision!
