UCLA Computer Science vs Computer Science and Engineering: Which major should I choose?

Hey guys, I got accepted to UCLA and I'm interested in studying computer science. I noticed that UCLA offers both Computer Science and Computer Science & Engineering as majors. What are the main differences between these two majors, and which one would be better in terms of career prospects and interdisciplinary opportunities?

Congratulations on your acceptance to UCLA! Choosing between Computer Science (CS) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) can be a bit confusing at first, but let me break down the primary differences and help you come to a decision.

The Computer Science major focuses mainly on software aspects and covers programming languages, data structures, algorithms, computer organization, operating systems and more.

On the other hand, Computer Science & Engineering combines the core content of a CS degree with some aspects of engineering, primarily electrical or computer engineering. Students pursuing CSE will cover topics like circuits, signal processing, and hardware-software integration, in addition to the CS coursework mentioned earlier.

In terms of career prospects, both majors can provide you with excellent job opportunities, as the tech industry is vast and continually expanding. CS may lead you to careers in software development, data science, or web development, while CSE could open doors to roles that involve computer hardware, firmware development, or a mix of hardware and software.

Regarding interdisciplinary opportunities, it mostly depends on your personal interests and goals. If you are passionate about software development and not as keen on hardware or electrical aspects, then CS might be a better fit. However, if you're interested in diving into both the software and hardware domains and enjoy engineering topics, CSE would be an excellent choice.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preferences and future career aspirations. Think about your interests within computer science and whether or not you also want to explore the engineering side. Both majors are well-regarded and will provide you with a strong foundation for a successful career in technology. Good luck in making your decision!
