Cal Poly SLO acceptance rate for Computer Science

What's up guys! I'm currently a junior and I'm super interested in majoring in Computer Science. I've been looking into Cal Poly SLO as one of my top choices. Does anyone know the specific acceptance rate for their CS program? And any advice on strengthening my application?

Hey there! Cal Poly SLO's Computer Science program is quite competitive. While the overall acceptance rate at Cal Poly SLO is around 28-30%, the acceptance rate for the CS program can be more selective and is typically lower than the overall acceptance rate. Though I can't provide an exact number, it's important to keep in mind that Computer Science is a popular and competitive major at many universities.

In order to strengthen your application, here are a few tips you could consider:

1. Strong academics: Ensure you have a solid GPA and take rigorous courses related to computer science (like AP Computer Science, if your school offers it). If you can, try to excel in math courses as well, as they're an essential component of computer science education.

2. Extracurricular involvement: Participate in computer science-related clubs or activities at your school like coding clubs or robotics. If your school doesn't have any, consider starting one! Regional or national programming competitions, like USACO or ACSL, are also great ways to demonstrate your computer science skills.

3. Projects: Work on personal projects to showcase your understanding of programming languages and computer science concepts. Create a portfolio or GitHub profile to share your work with the admissions committee. Examples of projects could include building a mobile app, developing a website, or creating a game.

4. Relevant experience: Seek out internships, summer programs, or job-shadowing opportunities in the computer science field. Gaining real-world experience will not only boost your application but also help you understand what it's like to work in the industry.

5. Letters of recommendation: Try to build a strong relationship with your computer science or math teachers who can provide a compelling recommendation that highlights your skills and passion for the subject.

6. Application essays: In your essays, demonstrate your interest and commitment to computer science by emphasizing your involvement in related activities, projects, or experiences.

7. Optional standardized test scores: Due to COVID-19, Cal Poly SLO has been test-optional since Fall 2023. However, if you have strong SAT/ACT scores, especially in the Math section, it might be advantageous to submit them. Check with Cal Poly SLO for their current policy.

Good luck with your application and the pursuit of your passion for computer science!
