MIT Major Declaration Process?

Hey, y'all! I'm thinking about applying to MIT. I want to know how the major declaration process works at MIT. Do you declare your major at the time of application or do you have some time after enrollment to explore before choosing a major? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! At MIT, you don't have to declare your major when you apply. In fact, all incoming freshmen are admitted as "undeclared" regardless of the interests they express on their application. This setup gives you the opportunity to explore your options and get a sense of what truly interests you after you enroll at the Institute.

During your first year, you'll take a combination of General Institute Requirements (GIRs) and elective classes, which allow you to get a better feel for different fields and disciplines. Most students declare their major at the end of their freshman year (typically in March or April), but you don’t officially need to until the end of your sophomore year. This system is designed to give you the flexibility to explore before making a decision on your course of study.

Having said that, it is encouraged that you have a general idea on the academic areas that interest you coming in, since many majors have specific introductory courses that you should take during your freshman year. You can also attend departmental open houses and talk to faculty and older students to gain more information about each major before making your decision.

In case you realize later on that you've chosen a major that doesn't fit your interests or passions, MIT allows students to change their major, as long as they discuss it with their academic advisor and follow the necessary procedures. Overall, MIT's flexible approach to major declaration allows you to have plenty of time to explore, find your academic passion, and make a well-informed choice. Good luck!
