UIUC: Changing major to CS

I've been accepted into the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, but now I'm thinking about changing my major to Computer Science. How easy would it be to switch majors after I've already been accepted? Any tips or experience, please?

Congratulations on your acceptance to UIUC! Changing your major to Computer Science can be a bit competitive, but it's not impossible. UIUC's CS program is in high demand, and they have specific requirements to switch into the major. Here are some steps and tips to follow:

1. Research the requirements: Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for transferring into the CS major. You'll need to maintain a strong GPA, especially in prerequisite courses like Math and CS, which are considered when evaluating transfer requests. Some specific courses to focus on include CS 125 (Intro to Computer Science), Math 220 or 221 (Calculus), and CS 173 (Discrete Structures). Aim for a GPA of 3.67 or higher in these prerequisites.

2. Declare intent to change majors: Consult your academic advisor and inform them that you're interested in changing to the CS major. They'll guide you through the process and ensure you're taking the right courses to meet the prerequisites.

3. Get involved in extracurriculars related to Computer Science: Join clubs, participate in hackathons, or engage in independent projects to demonstrate your passion for CS. These activities showcase your dedication and can help strengthen your transfer application.

4. Develop relationships with CS faculty: Actively participate in class and get to know your CS professors. Building relationships with the faculty can lead to recommendations and advice, which could come in handy when requesting a major transfer.

5. Plan for alternative options: Since transferring into the CS major can be competitive, it's important to explore alternative pathways related to your interests. UIUC offers interdisciplinary and flexible programs like CS + X, where X represents another field of study (e.g., CS + Math, CS + Physics). These programs still provide a strong foundation in CS while adding another area of specialization, which might be an easier transition.

6. Apply for the major change: Once you have met the course requirements and criteria, submit an application to change your major. Typically, intercollegiate transfer applications are reviewed during specific times in the academic year, so keep an eye on those deadlines.

Remember that patience and persistence are key in this process. Maintain a high GPA and stay committed to your goal of switching to the CS major. Best of luck!
