Should I retake the SAT/ACT if my score is below my target school's average?

Hi collegevine, my SAT/ACT score is a bit below the average for one of my top-choice schools. Is it worth retaking the test to try and improve my score, or should I focus on other aspects of my application instead? I appreciate any advice you can give!

Hey there! I understand the dilemma you're facing. My child was in a similar situation not too long ago. Retaking the SAT/ACT can be beneficial if you believe there's a good chance you can improve your score. Keep in mind that colleges generally consider the highest score from each section, so there's little risk in trying again. However, it's important to weigh the time and effort you'll put into preparing for the test against the potential benefits of a higher score. If you're close to the application deadline, it might be more beneficial to focus on other aspects of your application, such as writing strong essays, securing solid letters of recommendation, and showcasing your extracurricular involvement. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide if retaking the test is the best choice for your situation. Just remember that test scores are only one part of the admissions process, and a slightly lower score doesn't mean you won't be considered. Best of luck!
