UMCP vs UMBC for engineering?

I'm trying to decide between University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) for engineering. Can anyone give me some insights into the engineering programs at these schools? How do they compare in terms of academics, faculty, and resources?

Both UMCP and UMBC offer quality engineering programs, but there are some differences that may influence your decision.

Academics: UMCP consistently ranks higher for its engineering program and thus is generally seen as more prestigious within the engineering community. It offers a broader range of engineering disciplines, including aerospace, bioengineering, and materials science. UMBC, while having strong programs, is known more for its computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering programs.

Faculty: UMCP's faculty tend to have more robust research portfolios and thus offer more opportunities for students to participate in research. UMBC, on the other hand, has smaller class sizes, which can lead to more personalized attention from professors. This can be beneficial, especially in a challenging major like engineering.

Resources: UMCP generally has more resources available to its engineering students, including state-of-the-art facilities, research opportunities, and well-funded projects. However, UMBC also has invested in its engineering facilities, including a new interdisciplinary life sciences building that opened in 2019. Additionally, UMBC has a strong focus on collaboration and a supportive student community, which some prefer over the competitiveness sometimes found at larger, more prestigious schools like UMCP.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preferences and priorities. If you're interested in a more prestigious program with a wider range of engineering disciplines, UMCP might be a better fit for you. However, if you prefer smaller class sizes, closer connections with faculty, and a collaborative atmosphere, UMBC could be an excellent choice.

Visiting both campuses and talking to current students and faculty can provide further insight into the programs and help you make the best decision for your educational and career goals. Good luck with your decision!
