Marine Biology programs: What schools offer the best ones?

Hi everyone! I'm super passionate about marine biology, and as I start my college search, I was hoping for some input. Can anyone recommend schools that are known to have strong marine biology programs? Bonus if they're near a coast for hands-on learning opportunities!

Hi there! It's fantastic that you're passionate about marine biology. I'm happy to help point you in the direction of some schools known for their strong marine biology programs. Keep in mind, though, that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many other schools with great offerings in the field. That being said, here are a few recommendations to get you started:

1. University of California, San Diego (Scripps Institution of Oceanography): This is one of the top marine science institutions in the world and offers fantastic research opportunities. Being directly on the coast means you'll have access to hands-on experiences as well.

2. University of Washington: Located in Seattle, UW offers a solid marine biology program, as well as proximity to the Pacific Northwest coast which provides diverse research opportunities. If you think you might be interested in grad school, UW’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences would also be an excellent option.

3. Duke University: Duke's Marine Lab, located in North Carolina, is dedicated to research in marine sciences, including marine biology. It's on the coast and offers plenty of experiential learning opportunities.

4. University of Miami: Known for its Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, the University of Miami has strong resources for marine biology research. Since the school is near the Atlantic coast, you'll have ample opportunities for hands-on experiences.

5. University of California, Santa Barbara: With a highly-regarded marine biology program and close proximity to the coast, UC Santa Barbara provides excellent access to both research and experiential learning opportunities.

6. University of Hawaii at Manoa: The Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology benefits from its unique location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It offers excellent resources and opportunities for hands-on learning and research.

7. College of Charleston: This South Carolina school is known for its Grice Marine Laboratory, which is dedicated to marine biology research. Its location near the Atlantic coast provides opportunities for hands-on experiences.

8. University of New England: Located in Maine, this university offers a solid marine biology program and good experiential learning opportunities, thanks to its proximity to the New England coast.

These are just a few examples of schools with strong marine biology programs and coastal locations. Make sure you do some additional research to find the school that's the best fit for you academically, financially, and socially. Good luck with your college search!
