How to qualify as a National Merit Scholar for the class of 2025?

Hey fellow juniors! I took the PSAT recently and I was wondering what the process is for becoming a National Merit Scholar. What are the requirements and do you have any tips for the class of 2025? Thanks!

Hello! To qualify as a National Merit Scholar you'll first need to have a high PSAT/NMSQT score. Though qualifying scores vary by state and by year, students typically need to score in the top 1% of test-takers within their respective state to move forward in the National Merit Scholarship process. I'll outline the basic steps and tips for you below:

1. Secure a high PSAT/NMSQT score: Your score needs to be above the Commended Score and within your state's cutoff for the National Merit Scholarship. The Commended Score is the same for all states, while each state has a specific Semifinalist cutoff score, which changes annually. Unfortunately, until the official scores and cutoffs are released, you won't know your exact standing.

2. Become a Semifinalist: If your score meets or exceeds your state's cutoff, you will be named a National Merit Semifinalist in September following your junior year. Approximately 16,000 students across the nation achieve Semifinalist status.

3. Advance to Finalist: To become a Finalist, you'll need to submit an application that includes personal information, an essay, a recommendation from a school official, and an official high school transcript. Additionally, you need to have a high SAT or ACT score to confirm your performance on the PSAT. Finalist applications are usually due in October. The majority of Semifinalists eventually become Finalists - around 15,000 each year.

4. Earn a National Merit Scholarship: Being a Finalist doesn't guarantee a scholarship, but it does put you in the running. Of the 15,000 Finalists, about 7,500 students are awarded a National Merit Scholarship, which comes in three different types: a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, a corporate-sponsored scholarship, or a college-sponsored scholarship.

Tips for success:

- To improve your chances of achieving a high PSAT score, familiarize yourself with the test format and content by taking practice tests and studying regularly.

- Keep up with your academics to ensure a strong high school transcript.

- When applying for the scholarship, craft a well-written, compelling essay that distinguishes you from other applicants and showcases your unique traits and experiences.

- Make sure you have a good relationship with a teacher or school official who can write you a strong recommendation letter.

Best of luck in your pursuit of a National Merit Scholarship!
