PSAT scholarship amount

How much money can you potentially get from a PSAT scholarship? Do the scholarship amounts vary depending on your score, or is it a fixed amount? What type of scholarships are available with good PSAT scores?

The PSAT, known as the Preliminary SAT, serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC). While the PSAT itself does not directly award scholarships, it opens doors to various scholarship opportunities for high-scoring students. Here's a brief overview of the most common scholarships associated with PSAT scores:

1. National Merit Scholarships: The top 1% of test takers, around 16,000 students, become National Merit Semifinalists. These students can then apply to become Finalists, of which around 15,000 are selected. Three types of National Merit Scholarships are awarded to Finalists:

a. National Merit $2,500 Scholarships: Fixed amount of $2,500, awarded to around 2,500 students based on a holistic assessment of their skills, accomplishments, and potential.

b. Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships: These scholarships can be one-time awards, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, or renewable annual stipends, ranging from $500 to $10,000 per year. The sponsoring corporations usually prioritizes candidates who are children of employees, residents of the community, or planning to pursue a specific career related to the sponsor's industry.

c. College-sponsored Merit Scholarships: These scholarships can be renewable awards ranging from $500 to full tuition per year, depending on the sponsoring college. Around 200 colleges and universities participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program and provide scholarships to finalists who enroll in their institution.

2. National Achievement Scholarship Program: This program is designed for Black American students and also uses the PSAT/NMSQT for the initial screening. The awards include a one-time payment of $2,500 and can be combined with other college-sponsored financial aid.

3. National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP): The NHRP recognizes high-performing Hispanic/Latino junior students based on their PSAT results. While there is no direct monetary award from NHRP, being a Scholar can enhance your application, and some colleges offer scholarships specifically for NHRP Scholars.

Remember that the scholarships mentioned above are just some opportunities associated with high PSAT scores. Many local, regional, and institutional scholarships might also take your PSAT performance into account. It's essential to research and apply for as many scholarships as you qualify for in order to maximize your financial aid potential.
