Number of Teacher Recommendations for College Applications?

Hi all, I'm starting to put together my college application plans and I was wondering how many teacher recommendations do you typically need for college apps? Also, is it better to ask teachers whose subjects are related to my major or just anyone who knows me well? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Generally, most colleges require two teacher recommendations for your application. However, it's essential to check the specific requirements for each college on your list, as some may ask for one, and others might require three.

As for choosing the teachers to write your recommendations, it's a good idea to pick those who can speak to your strengths, both academically and personally. Although it can be advantageous to have a recommendation from a teacher in the subject area related to your intended major, it's not absolutely necessary. It's more important to ask teachers who know you well and can provide detailed examples of your work ethic, intellectual curiosity, leadership, and personal growth over time.

Ideally, look for teachers who have taught you in junior or senior year, as they can provide a more recent perspective on your abilities. It's also a good idea to have a mix of subject areas, so if you choose a teacher from your intended major's subject area, consider asking a teacher from a different subject area for your second recommendation. This will give admissions officers a more comprehensive understanding of your abilities and potential.

Good luck with your applications!
