How does the National Merit Program work?

Hey everyone, I'm a little confused about the National Merit Program. What exactly is it and how does it work? Any info on the process and criteria for becoming a semifinalist/finalist would be super helpful!

Hey there! The National Merit Scholarship Program is a United States-based academic competition for high school students, primarily recognized through the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). The program aims to recognize and reward academically talented students across the nation.

Here's a brief overview of the process and criteria:

1. Take the PSAT/NMSQT in your junior year: To be considered, you must take the PSAT/NMSQT during the fall of your junior year. This standardized test serves as the initial screening of about 1.5 million students each year. Your score holds significance as it is the primary factor for determining your eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship.

2. Qualify as a Commended Student or Semifinalist: In the following September (your senior year), around 34,000 high-scorers nationwide receive Letters of Commendation for their outstanding scores. Around 16,000 students with higher scores are designated Semifinalists. The cutoff scores vary by state, and typically the top 1% of test-takers from each state become Semifinalists.

3. Advance to Finalist standing: Semifinalists must submit an application to compete for Finalist status. The application involves providing additional information regarding academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership experiences, and honors received. You will also need to write a personal statement. Furthermore, be sure to have a strong recommendation from a school official and keep up your grades. About 15,000 Semifinalists advance to become Finalists based on the holistic review of these materials.

4. Compete for scholarship awards: Finalists are eligible for National Merit Scholarship awards, which include the $2,500 National Merit Scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships. These scholarships can help fund your undergraduate education and reduce your student loan burden.

5. Receive scholarship offers: The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announces winners in four separate news releases between April and July. In total, around 7,500 students receive scholarships.

Keep in mind that although being a National Merit Scholar is prestigious, strong extracurricular involvement, leadership, and well-written essays are crucial components in college admissions. The National Merit Scholarship is just one way to strengthen your college application. Good luck!
