UNC Chapel Hill Out-of-State

I'm an out-of-state student super interested in UNC Chapel Hill, but I've heard it's tougher for non-residents. Anybody else in a similar situation or have any advice on how to stand out as an out-of-state applicant?

UNC Chapel Hill is indeed more competitive for out-of-state students, as the University has a cap on the percentage of out-of-state students they admit (a maximum of 18%). But don't let that discourage you—there are ways to make your application stand out and be competitive.

1. Academics: First and foremost, ensure that your academics are strong. Aim for a high GPA, and take challenging courses such as AP, IB, or Honors classes when possible. Your academic performance shows the University that you would be capable of handling rigorous coursework at UNC.

2. Test scores (optional): Although UNC Chapel Hill is currently test-optional, strong SAT or ACT scores can still help showcase your academic strengths, especially as an out-of-state applicant. If you've performed well on these exams, consider submitting your scores.

3. Extracurriculars/spikes: UNC is looking for students who are deeply involved in their areas of interest. Make sure you're engaged in a few extracurriculars that align with your passions and career goals. Try to achieve leadership roles or demonstrate impact within these activities. Having a "spike" or a highly-developed specialty can set you apart from other applicants.

4. Essays: UNC's supplemental essays are an opportunity to show your personality and make a memorable impression. Be genuine, authentic, and focus on aspects of your life that are unique to you. Share personal stories to connect with the reader and craft a narrative that showcases your individuality, values, and passion. 5. Demonstrate interest in UNC: While not required, demonstrating your interest in UNC can help show the admissions committee that you're serious about attending. Attend virtual events, connect with current students, or reach out to the admissions office with specific questions about their programs. This can help make it clear that UNC is a top choice for you.

6. Recommendations: Strong letters of recommendation can make a difference. Make sure you ask teachers, mentors, or coaches who know you well and can speak to your strengths, work ethic, and dedication.

Ultimately, while being an out-of-state applicant for UNC Chapel Hill can be more challenging, it's still very much possible to be admitted with a strong application that highlights your academic achievements, passions, and personal qualities. Good luck!
