Is UMD a Public Ivy?

I'm quite interested in the University of Maryland. Does anyone know if UMD is considered a Public Ivy, or have any information about its academic reputation?

UMD, or the University of Maryland, College Park, is not officially categorized as a "Public Ivy." The term "Public Ivy" was initially coined by Richard Moll in his 1985 book "Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities" to describe public institutions that offer a quality of education similar to that of the Ivy League schools. Moll's original list included eight institutions, and UMD wasn't one of them.

However, it's important to remember that the "Public Ivy" label is not an official designation, and many colleges and universities have continued to earn greater recognition and achieve academic excellence over the years. UMD has an excellent academic reputation and is consistently ranked highly, especially for its engineering, computer science, and business programs. It is also a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), which comprises 66 leading research institutions in the United States and Canada.

Although UMD is not considered a "Public Ivy," its strong academic programs, research opportunities, and vibrant campus life provide a high-quality education and experience for its students. When evaluating colleges, it's best to focus on factors that are important to you, such as academic offerings, campus culture, location, and financial aid, rather than relying solely on labels or rankings.
