Using a Calculator on the AP Calculus AB Exam

Hey guys, I'm a bit confused about the calculator policy for the AP Calculus AB exam. Which parts of the test can I use my calculator on, and what type of calculator is allowed? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there! I completely understand how the calculator policy for the AP Calculus AB exam can be confusing. No worries though—I'll help clarify it for you!

The AP Calculus AB exam consists of two sections: Section I with multiple-choice questions and Section II with free-response questions. You'll have 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete both sections.

1. Section I has two parts: Part A and Part B.

- Part A: Includes 30 multiple-choice questions that you can use a calculator on. You'll have 60 minutes to complete this part.

- Part B: Includes 15 multiple-choice questions that are NON-calculator. You'll have 45 minutes to work on this part without a calculator.

2. Section II also has two parts: Part A and Part B.

- Part A: Contains 2 free-response questions where you're allowed to use a calculator. You'll have 30 minutes for this portion.

- Part B: Contains 4 free-response questions that are calculator inactive. You will have 60 minutes to answer these without a calculator.

Regarding the type of calculator allowed, only graphing calculators are permitted on the calculator sections of the exam. Some well-known and popular models that are typically allowed include the TI-83, TI-84, and TI-89, as well as the Casio PRIZM fx-CG50. However, it's important to review the College Board's AP Calculator Policy beforehand to ensure your calculator model is in compliance as they provide a list of approved calculators.

Remember to familiarize yourself with your calculator's functions before the exam, and best of luck!
