APUSH - how is the multiple choice graded?

Hi everyone! I'm taking APUSH this year and I'm a bit confused about how the multiple choice section is graded. Are there any APUSH veterans here who can give me a quick rundown of the grading scale? Thanks!

Hi! I'd be happy to help explain the grading process for the APUSH multiple choice section. The multiple choice section of the AP U.S. History (APUSH) exam consists of 55 questions, and you have 55 minutes to complete this portion. It's important to note that there is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it's always a good idea to answer every question, even if you have to guess.

The multiple-choice section accounts for 40% of your total exam score. Each question is worth the same amount of points, so answering more questions correctly will result in a higher score for this section.

Your raw multiple choice score is calculated based on the number of questions you answer correctly. This raw score is then combined with your raw scores on the other sections of the exam and converted to a scaled score ranging from 1 to 5 using the College Board's AP scoring rubric. The exact conversion can vary from year to year, as the College Board adjusts the conversion to account for the difficulty of each specific exam.

Just a reminder that in order to be well-prepared for the exam, it's crucial to not only focus on the multiple-choice section but also to practice the short-answer questions, document-based question, and long essay question, as they collectively make up the remaining 60% of your score.

I hope this helps clarify the APUSH multiple choice grading system! Good luck with your studies and the exam!
