Johns Hopkins: What do they look for?

Johns Hopkins is one of my dream schools, and I'm trying to understand what sets their successful applicants apart. What kind of qualities and experiences do they typically look for in their applicants? Any advice from current/former students or experts would be greatly appreciated!

Johns Hopkins University is known for its prestigious reputation and academic excellence, so it's natural that you're curious about what they look for in applicants. In general, JHU values a strong academic background, well-rounded extracurricular involvement, and a demonstrated passion for learning.

1. Academic strength: Rigorous coursework, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, as well as high grades, are essential. In addition, competitive SAT or ACT scores (if submitted) will strengthen your application. While there is no specific score threshold, aim for scores within the middle 50% range of admitted students to be competitive.

2. Extracurricular involvement: JHU values applicants who are engaged in their communities and have diverse interests. Aim for a mix of quality extracurricular activities, with depth of involvement in a few select areas. Keep in mind the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars, where Tier 1 and 2 activities (such as national awards or state-wide leadership positions) hold the most weight.

3. Intellectual curiosity and passion: JHU looks for applicants who display enthusiasm for learning and exploring their chosen field(s) of study. Showcasing your genuine interest in one or more academic area(s) through internships, research projects, clubs, or competitions is highly advantageous.

4. Personal qualities: JHU values attributes like resilience, determination, leadership, and collaboration. Your essays and letters of recommendation are crucial for highlighting these qualities, as they allow the admissions committee to see how you've made an impact on your community and have handled challenges.

5. Fit for the university: Your application should convey a clear understanding of the JHU's culture, mission, and programs. Research the school and tailor your essays to demonstrate your familiarity with their offerings and how you would benefit from and contribute to the campus community.

In summary, Johns Hopkins seeks applicants who excel academically, participate in meaningful extracurriculars, show intellectual curiosity, display personal qualities that align with their values, and demonstrate a strong fit with the university. Good luck, and I hope this helps you in your journey towards becoming a JHU student!
