Hey all, U of M is one of my top choices and I'm wondering if any current students or alumni have advice on what aspects of my application to focus on. What was important for you guys when applying? GPA, extracurriculars, essays, something else? I'd really appreciate any input you could give me. Thanks in advance!
Hello! It's great that you're considering the University of Michigan as one of your top choices. While every application is unique, there are a few key areas that are important for your application to U of M.
1. Academic record: Make sure to keep your GPA competitive, as U of M looks for strong academic performance. Also, take challenging courses (AP, IB, or Honors) to demonstrate your academic rigor.
2. Test scores (optional): Although U of M has a test-optional policy, having a strong SAT or ACT score can potentially strengthen your application, especially if your GPA is on the lower end of the average range for admitted students.
3. Extracurricular activities: U of M values commitment and leadership in extracurriculars. Make sure to focus on a few key activities where you can show dedication, impact, and growth. Aim for high-quality involvement (ex: leadership roles, accomplishments, or recognition) rather than spreading yourself too thin across multiple clubs or organizations.
4. Essays: The essays are a crucial aspect of your application, as they allow you to showcase your personality, interests, and passions. Spend ample time brainstorming, writing, and editing your essays. The University of Michigan has specific essay prompts (called U-M writing supplements) that you'll need to answer in addition to the main Common App or Coalition App essay. These supplements are a chance for you to convey how you would fit into and contribute to the U of M community.
5. Letters of recommendation: Choose teachers and counselors who know you well and can speak to your strengths, character, and potential. These letters can further provide insight into your qualities that set you apart from other applicants.
6. Demonstrated interest: Attend U of M virtual or in-person events (information sessions, campus tours, etc.) and make sure to engage with admissions representatives or current students. Although demonstrated interest is not a major factor at U of M, it can still be helpful to show the school that you're genuinely interested.
Remember that each applicant's profile is different, and what worked for someone else might not be the exact recipe for your application. However, focusing on these key areas and ensuring that your application as a whole effectively showcases your strengths, interests, and personality will increase your chances of standing out to U of M's admissions committee.
Best of luck with your application!
