When using an AP score calculator, you'll need to input (roughly) the number of multiple-choice questions you answered correctly, as well as your (again, approximate) performance on the free-response questions, which are graded on a scale from 1-9. Based on this information, the calculator will take your raw score and convert it to an estimated score out of 5.
Remember, though, this is just an approximation and should be taken with a grain of salt, as the official scoring guidelines can vary from year to year, and you obviously don't know how your free-response questions will be graded, nor exactly how many multiple-choice questions you answered correctly.
