What does it take to become a National Merit Scholar Finalist?

Hi everyone! I'm trying to become a National Merit Scholar Finalist in 2023. What are the requirements to become a finalist and what advice do you have for someone trying to achieve this?

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a prestigious academic competition based on the PSAT/NMSQT scores. To become a National Merit Scholar Finalist, you will need to follow a multi-step process:

1. Take the PSAT/NMSQT: You must take the PSAT/NMSQT during your junior year of high school, typically in October. This test serves as the initial screening for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Make sure to prepare well for the test, as your score will be crucial in determining your eligibility for the program.

2. Qualify as a Semifinalist: If your test score falls within the top 1% of scorers in your state, you may qualify as a National Merit Semifinalist. States have their own Selection Index cutoffs, which vary from year to year. While you won't know the exact cutoffs until they are announced, you can look up previous years' cutoffs to get a general idea of the scores needed.

3. Meet academic and other requirements: Apart from a high PSAT/NMSQT score, you must also have an outstanding academic record, typically with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. You should also demonstrate evidence of extracurricular involvement, leadership skills, and strong character.

4. Submit a National Merit Scholarship Application: As a Semifinalist, you will be invited to submit a detailed application. This application will include information about your academics, extracurricular activities, and any honors or awards you have received. You will also need to write a personal essay, obtain a recommendation from a school official (typically a teacher or counselor), and confirm your SAT scores align with your PSAT/NMSQT performance.

5. Advance to Finalist standing: A panel of judges will evaluate your Semifinalist application and determine whether you advance to Finalist standing. Approximately 15,000 out of 16,000 Semifinalists are selected as Finalists each year.

6. Apply for and potentially win a National Merit Scholarship: As a Finalist, you may be considered for National Merit Scholarships. There are three types: National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships. Keep in mind that becoming a Finalist does not guarantee a scholarship, as only about half of the Finalists are ultimately selected as scholarship winners.

To prepare, focus on improving your PSAT/NMSQT scores and maintaining a strong academic record. Additionally, actively participate in extracurricular activities and develop your leadership skills to showcase a well-rounded profile. Do some research or connect with others who have gone through the process to gather tips and learn from their experiences. Good luck!
