Columbia Admissions and Major Selection

Hi everyone! I'm applying to Columbia and I wanted to know if they admit students by major? Does my choice of major impact my chances of getting in?

Hello! At Columbia University, the admissions process is not major-specific, meaning you won't be admitted based on the major you indicate on your application. When you apply to Columbia, you apply to the College or the School of Engineering, depending on your interests.

However, your choice of major can still have an impact on your application, as the admissions office will be looking for coherence between your academic interests, extracurricular activities, and your major. It's important to demonstrate your passion for your intended field, as well as your ability to thrive in that discipline during your time at college.

Although you're not admitted by major, having a clear focus and a good understanding of your interests can strengthen your application by showing the admissions team that you have a well-established direction and a plan for your future at Columbia.

Keep in mind that Columbia values a diverse class, so they will consider your interests and background in the context of the entire applicant pool. Be sure to put forward your unique perspective and experiences in your application, including how your interests have shaped who you are and how you would contribute to the community at Columbia.

In summary, while your choice of major won't directly affect your chances of getting in, it is important to demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm and commitment to your intended field, as well as how it ties to your overall application. Good luck with your application!
