PSAT Scholarship Money

Hey guys, I was wondering how the PSAT scholarships work? Like, what scores do I need to be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship and other awards?

Hello! The PSAT is important for scholarships because it serves as the initial qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Based on your PSAT score, you could become a National Merit Commended Student, Semifinalist, or Finalist, which can make you eligible for various scholarships. Here's a brief overview of the process:

1. Commended Students: To be recognized as a Commended Student, your PSAT score needs to be among the top 50,000 scorers nationally. While this recognition does not come with specific scholarships, it can still boost your college application.

2. Semifinalists: To become a National Merit Semifinalist, your PSAT score needs to fall within the top 1% of scorers in your state (typically, above the 99th percentile). Semifinalist status can lead to scholarships and also greatly enhances your college application.

3. Finalists: Semifinalists must complete an additional application to be considered for National Merit Finalist status. The process includes submitting an essay, your grades, extracurricular involvement, and a letter of recommendation. Of the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, around 15,000 advance to the Finalist level. Becoming a finalist significantly increases the scholarship opportunities available, with around 7,500 winners receiving National Merit Scholarships worth $2,500. Some colleges and corporations also offer scholarships to finalists.

Keep in mind that the necessary PSAT score for scholarship eligibility varies by state and may differ year to year. However, you can find historical data on past cutoff scores to get a general idea of how high you need to score to become a Semifinalist.

It's important to note that the PSAT is also known as the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) because it serves as the main gateway to these scholarships. Remember to do your best and to additionally focus on other aspects of your college application, such as grades, extracurricular activities, and essays, as well-rounded applications tend to be more competitive for scholarships in general.

Good luck!
