Hello! I've heard the term 'National Merit' being mentioned a lot but I'm not quite sure what it is. Can someone please explain what it's all about and how can a high school student achieve it? Thanks!
National Merit is a prestigious academic program in the United States that recognizes high-achieving high school students based on their PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) scores. The program is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and awards scholarships to a select number of students each year.
To qualify for National Merit recognition, you need to take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of your junior year of high school. The test consists of sections on evidence-based reading and writing, as well as math.
After taking the test, students who score in the top 3-4% of test-takers (usually around 50,000 students) are recognized as Commended Students. The top 1% (approximately 16,000 students) are named National Merit Semifinalists, based on a varying state-by-state cutoff score.
Semifinalists then have the opportunity to compete for the designation of National Merit Finalist by submitting an application that includes a strong academic record, extracurricular activities, an essay, and a recommendation from a school official. Around 15,000 of the 16,000 Semifinalists are selected as Finalists.
Finally, about 8,000 of the National Merit Finalists are chosen to receive various types of National Merit Scholarships. These scholarships include a one-time $2,500 award, corporate-sponsored scholarships, or college-sponsored scholarships from participating universities.
Earning recognition as a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist not only has the potential to provide financial assistance but also adds a significant distinction to your college application. The program is well regarded by colleges and universities, so being recognized can boost your chances of admission to competitive schools.
