Recommended ACT Score Ranges

Hey everyone! I was wondering what good ACT score ranges are, and what scores are considered competitive when applying to selective colleges. I'd love some advice on setting an ACT score goal for myself!

Hi there! It's great that you're aiming for a competitive ACT score. For top-tier colleges (Ivy League and similarly selective institutions), a competitive ACT score would fall in the 33-36 range. Most of these schools have middle 50% score ranges between 32 and 35, meaning that 25% of admitted students scored below 32 and 25% scored above 35. With a score of 33 or higher, you'll be in a strong position and will surpass the 50th percentile of accepted students at most selective colleges.

However, keep in mind that each college has its own individual score preferences and ranges, so it's essential to research the specific schools on your list. If you're aiming for more selective but not necessarily top-tier colleges, a score between 30 and 33 would be very competitive as well.

It's important to remember that while standardized test scores are a component of your application, they're not the sole determinant of your acceptance. Admissions offices evaluate your application holistically, considering factors such as your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and essays. With that said, a high ACT score can help bolster your application and demonstrate your academic aptitude.

As you set your score goals, remember to take into consideration the specific schools you're interested in and their admissions profiles. Also, factor in your own abilities, study habits, and resources available for test preparation. It might be helpful to take a diagnostic test to get a baseline score, and then create a study plan to work on those areas that need improvement. Good luck on your journey to achieving your desired ACT score!
