What is ED2?

I know about Early Decision (ED1), but what's the deal with Early Decision 2 (ED2)? How does it work and what are the benefits?

Early Decision 2 (ED2) is similar to Early Decision 1 (ED1), but it has a later deadline and notification date, usually falling in January or February instead of November. Like ED1, ED2 is a binding agreement where you commit to attending the college if accepted, so you can only apply ED2 to one institution.

The main benefits of ED2 are:

1. More time: ED2 provides you with additional time to polish your application, weigh your college options, and perhaps visit campuses. This extra time can be advantageous if you feel your application would benefit from additional involvement, better grades, or updated test scores.

2. Strategic opportunity: If you have already been rejected or deferred from your ED1 school, applying ED2 can give you another chance to demonstrate your commitment to another top-choice college. Applying ED demonstrates a high level of interest in the institution, which often translates to a higher acceptance rate compared to Regular Decision (RD).

3. Higher acceptance rates: Similar to ED1, colleges tend to have higher acceptance rates for ED2 applicants compared to RD applicants. That being said, the increase in chances might be lower than ED1 since colleges have already filled a portion of their class with ED1 applicants.

Keep in mind that, like ED1, applying ED2 means that if you're accepted, you're obligated to attend the school and withdraw your applications from other colleges. It's crucial to assess your interest in the school and, particularly, explore financial aid options via the school's net price calculator to ensure it's a viable choice.

Before applying ED2, make sure you're confident in your decision and are willing to commit to the college if accepted. ED2 can be a valuable option for students prepared to commit to a different top-choice school after the ED1 decision outcome.
