Hey everyone! I'm a junior in high school, and I was wondering if any colleges offer Coast Guard ROTC programs? I'm really interested in serving and want to make sure I apply to schools that have this option available. Thanks!
Hello! While the Coast Guard doesn't have a traditional ROTC program like the Army, Navy, and Air Force, they do have a similar program called the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI). The CSPI program is designed to prepare college students for careers as Coast Guard officers. Students accepted into the program receive full tuition, funding for books, and a monthly stipend while completing their undergraduate degree.
After graduation, CSPI participants attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) and, if successful, receive a commission as an Ensign in the Coast Guard. Please note that there is a service commitment upon successful completion of OCS.
The CSPI program is available at colleges and universities designated as Minority Serving Institutions, which have a certain percentage of minority student enrollment (Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, or Native American). Some examples include California State University Maritime Academy, Florida A&M University, and University of Puerto Rico. However, this is not an exhaustive list, and you'll want to explore the Coast Guard's official website and reach out to a Coast Guard recruiter for more information on eligible schools and the application process.
Good luck on your college search and pursuing your interest in serving with the Coast Guard!
