Can Colleges Detect AI-Written Essays?

Just curious, but can colleges actually detect if an essay was written by an AI? Will they be suspicious if the writing is not consistent with my other work? Thanks!

It's certainly possible for college admissions officers to raise suspicions if an applicant's essay appears significantly different in style, tone, or quality compared to the rest of their application materials. While detecting whether an essay is AI-written might not be their main focus, their goal is to assess consistency and authenticity across the applicant's whole profile. If there's an inconsistency, it can cast doubt on the authenticity of the essay and your application as a whole.

Colleges are looking for a genuine representation of who you are, your unique voice and experiences, and an AI-generated essay is unlikely to reflect that accurately. Furthermore, using one risks serious consequences, like getting your application rejected or even being expelled if the deception is discovered after admission.

Instead of trying to use AI to write your essay, consider focusing on self-improvement. Take time to practice and develop your writing skills. Utilize resources such as writing workshops, peer review, English teachers, or private counselors to get feedback and improve your writing. Remember, your college essay is a chance to showcase your individuality, strengths, and passions. Honesty and authenticity are essential aspects that will help you stand out in the admissions process.
