Is it better to have a high GPA in easier classes or a lower GPA in more challenging classes?

Hey guys, I'm a junior and I'm trying to decide which classes to take next year. Is it better for college admissions to have a high GPA in easier classes or a lower GPA in more challenging classes? Thanks for any advice!

Hi there! This is a great question and one that many students face when planning their high school course load. The answer isn't one-size-fits-all, as different colleges look for different things in their applicants. However, in general, many colleges prefer to see students challenging themselves with tougher courses, even if it means a slightly lower GPA. Taking advanced classes, like AP or honors courses, shows that you're willing to push yourself academically and can handle the rigor of college-level coursework. That said, it's important not to overload yourself with too many difficult classes, as a significant drop in your GPA might not be ideal either. A good rule of thumb is to strike a balance between challenging courses and maintaining a strong GPA. When my own child was in high school, they took a mix of advanced and regular classes, making sure to focus on their areas of interest and passion. This strategy seemed to work well for them during the college admissions process. Good luck with your decisions!
