What makes a college want to accept you?

Hey fellow students, I'm just curious to know what makes a college want to accept a student. What qualities or accomplishments stand out to them when they're reviewing applications? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! Colleges evaluate applicants using a variety of factors that generally fall into a few categories: academics, extracurriculars, character, and fit. Here's an overview of each.

1. Academics: Admissions officers will assess your academic potential by looking at your GPA, course rigor (such as AP or IB classes), and, if applicable, standardized test scores. Demonstrating strong academic performance in challenging courses is crucial, as it shows that you're capable of handling college-level coursework.

2. Extracurriculars: Colleges also want to see that you're engaged in activities outside the classroom that showcase your interests, passions, and commitment. Aim for quality over quantity. A few extracurricular activities in which you exhibit leadership, dedication, and a high level of involvement tells a better story than a long list of clubs in which you're not deeply invested. Activities are often evaluated using a 4-tier system, with Tier 1 being the rarest and most impressive national or international achievements, and Tier 4 being the most common participation in clubs, sports, or volunteering.

3. Character: This aspect is evaluated through your essays, recommendation letters, and, in some cases, interviews. Admissions officers are looking for students who demonstrate qualities like resilience, intellectual curiosity, and empathy, among others. Make sure your essays and other application materials showcase your unique experiences and perspectives, as well as illustrate your personal growth.

4. Fit: Lastly, colleges want students who will be a good fit for their campus culture and values. Research the specific college's mission and values and consider how your interests, goals, and experiences align with them. If you can demonstrate that you're a good fit, it'll increase your chances of being accepted.

As you work on your applications, focus on presenting yourself as a well-rounded applicant who excels academically, is deeply engaged in extracurricular activities, and possesses strong character traits that align with the college's values. Best of luck!
