AP or Honors classes: which do colleges prefer?

Hi there! I'm trying to plan out my high school schedule, and I'm curious - do colleges generally prefer to see AP classes or honors classes on a student's transcript? Or do they view them equally? Thanks in advance for your input!

Hello! Great question. When it comes to college admissions, most colleges prefer to see AP (Advanced Placement) classes on a student's transcript because they provide a standardized level of rigor recognized nationally. AP classes are generally considered more challenging than honors classes and, in many cases, follow a specific curriculum defined by the College Board. Furthermore, AP classes often prepare students for AP exams, which can potentially lead to college credit.

That being said, honors classes can still be valuable in demonstrating a strong academic record and dedication to rigor, especially if your school doesn't offer a wide range of AP courses or if you're passionate about a subject that isn't available as an AP course. Also, if you have the opportunity to take both, try to strike a good balance between AP and honors classes based on your interests and strengths.

In the end, colleges are primarily interested in seeing that you've pursued the most challenging course load available to you at your high school while maintaining strong grades. So, when planning your high school schedule, aim for a mix of AP and honors classes that align with your interests, strengths, and academic goals.
