Got deferred from Early Decision—now what?

Hey y'all, I just got deferred from my ED dream school. I'm feeling a bit lost and unsure about what to do next. What steps should I take now to increase my chances during regular decision?

First of all, don't lose hope! Being deferred means your application is still being considered, and you have a chance of being accepted during the Regular Decision round. Here are some steps you can take to potentially increase your chances:

1. Update the school on your achievements: If you've had any significant accomplishments or received any awards since submitting your application, be sure to update your dream school. You can do this by sending a brief, concise email or letter to the admissions office, sharing your new achievements and reiterating your interest in attending the school.

2. Strengthen your application: Use the time between now and the Regular Decision round to work on areas of your application that could be improved. Perhaps you can retake standardized tests (if the school in question isn't test-optional or test-blind), or try to boost your grades in your senior year.

3. Seek additional letters of recommendation: If you can obtain a new, strong letter of recommendation that adds a different perspective to your application, consider sending it to the school. This should focus on qualities or achievements not highlighted by your previous recommenders.

4. Reflect on your essays: Now that you've had some time away from your application, revisit your essays and see if there's anything you could improve. If you've identified any weaknesses, consider reaching out to the admissions office with a brief addendum or revision (if they accept such updates).

5. Continue expressing interest: Show the school that you are still excited to attend by engaging with them on social media and attending virtual events if possible. A demonstrated interest in the school can leave a positive impression on the admissions committee.

6. Have a backup plan: While working to improve your chances at your dream school, make sure you also submit strong applications to other colleges during Regular Decision. This can help give you peace of mind knowing you have options in case you're not accepted to your dream school in the end.

Stay optimistic and proactive, and remember that many students receive acceptance letters during the Regular Decision round. Good luck!
