Recommendation letters: Seeing colleges we apply to?

Hey, I was wondering if our recommenders (teachers/counselors) can actually see the list of colleges we're applying to when they submit the letters. Do they have any reason to know, or is that info kept private? Just curious!

Hey there! When recommenders submit their letters through the Common App, Coalition App, or any other application platforms, they typically cannot see the specific list of colleges you're applying to. The application platforms are designed in such a way to preserve your privacy, and recommenders are only granted access to the specific sections they need to complete.

That being said, it's not unusual for teachers or counselors to ask you about your college choices during the recommendation process, just to get a better understanding of the types of schools you're interested in and to tailor their recommendation accordingly. If you don't want your recommenders to know the complete list of colleges you're applying to, it's completely fine to keep it private or share only a few select schools. However, having an open conversation about your college choices with your recommenders can sometimes help them provide a more personalized and effective recommendation letter. Good luck with your applications!
