Is Georgetown an Ivy?

Not really clear on this. Just found out that Georgetown is a super prestigious school, but is it considered an Ivy League institution? What sets Ivy Leagues apart from other top universities?

Georgetown University is not part of the Ivy League. The Ivy League is a group of eight prestigious universities in the Northeastern United States, consisting of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, Dartmouth, and Cornell. These institutions are known for their long history, exceptional academics, and highly competitive admissions.

While Georgetown is not an Ivy League school, it is still considered a highly prestigious institution. Located in Washington, D.C., it's known for its rigorous academic programs, particularly in fields such as International Relations, Business, and Law. The distinction between an Ivy League university and other top-tier schools like Georgetown often comes down to tradition and history, not necessarily the quality of education or resources available.

One key aspect that differentiates Ivy League institutions from others is their membership in the Ivy League athletic conference, which was originally established for athletic purposes. These schools are part of the NCAA Division I, which means they field competitive sports teams. Additionally, the Ivy League schools are all private institutions rather than public.

It's important to note that there are many exceptional colleges and universities in the United States that offer top-notch education, resources, and opportunities, but are not part of the Ivy League. These institutions, which are sometimes referred to as the "New Ivies" or simply prestigious non-Ivy schools, can include Georgetown, Stanford, MIT, University of Chicago, Duke, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern, among others.

Ultimately, choosing a college should be about finding the best fit for your academic interests and personal growth, rather than focusing solely on Ivy League status or prestige.
