Umich Premed Requirements: What do I need to know?

Hey guys, I'm interested in pre-med and considering the University of Michigan. Can anyone share some info on the specific premed requirements at Umich? Course-wise and extracurricular-wise advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! The University of Michigan does not have a specific "pre-med" major, but they do offer excellent advising and resources for pre-med students through their Pre-Health Advising Center. While the requirements and recommendations vary depending on the medical school you plan to apply to, there are certain core courses that most pre-med students at Umich should take to fulfill prerequisites:

1. General Biology (BIO 171, 172, 173)

2. General Chemistry (CHEM 130, 210, 211)

3. Organic Chemistry (CHEM 215, 216)

4. Biochemistry (MCDB 310 or BIOLCHEM 415)

5. Physics (PHYSICS 135, 136, and 235, 236 or PHYSICS 140, 141, 240, 241)

6. English (two writing-intensive courses)

7. Mathematics (two courses in calculus or one in calculus and one in statistics)

Aside from coursework, it's important to gain experiences related to healthcare and develop a competitive application for medical schools. Some of the key extracurricular activities to consider would be:

1. Clinical Experience: Volunteer or work in a clinical setting like a hospital or clinic to gain exposure to patients and healthcare professionals.

2. Research Experience: Participate in a research project or lab, preferably related to biomedical sciences or an area you're passionate about.

3. Shadowing: Shadow a physician in a specialty of your interest to gain insight into the daily life of a healthcare professional.

4. Community Service: Get involved in community service projects, ideally with a focus on underserved populations, to demonstrate your commitment to helping others.

Finally, you'll want to maintain a strong GPA, especially in your science courses, and prepare for the MCAT exam. University of Michigan's Pre-Health Advising Center can help you navigate the path to medical school and provide guidance in selecting courses, preparing for the MCAT, and strengthening your application with the right extracurricular experiences. Good luck on your pre-med journey at Umich!
