What are the pre-med requirements for Cornell University?

Hi, I'm a junior and I'm really interested in pursuing medicine in the future. Cornell University is my dream school, and I want to make sure I'm prepared for their pre-med program. Can anyone tell me about the specific requirements I should be focusing on? Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

Hi there! It's great to hear that you're interested in pursuing medicine and considering Cornell University. Although Cornell doesn't have a specific pre-med major, it does have a pre-med advising system to help you navigate your coursework and prepare for medical school.

Here are the general pre-med requirements that you should be focusing on:

1. One year of General Biology with lab (e.g., BIOG 1440 & 1445, BIOG 1500, and BIOG 1350)

2. One year of General Chemistry with lab (e.g., CHEM 2070 & 2080)

3. One year of Organic Chemistry with lab (e.g., CHEM 3570 & 3580)

4. One year of Physics with lab (e.g., PHYS 1101 & 1102 or PHYS 2207 & 2208)

5. Biochemistry (e.g., BIOMG 3310 or BIOMG 3350)

6. One semester of Calculus (e.g., MATH 1106 or MATH 1110)

7. Statistics (e.g., BTRY 3010 or STSCI 2150)

8. One year of English (e.g., a First-Year Writing Seminar, ENGL 2880, 2890, 3020, etc.)

Keep in mind that different medical schools might have slightly different requirements, so it's a good idea to research the schools you're interested in and familiarize yourself with their specific pre-med requirements.

Although not required, taking additional courses in Genetics, Psychology, and Sociology can be beneficial for the MCAT and for medical school preparation. Also, consider being involved in research, volunteering, or clinical experiences that showcase your interests and dedication to medicine.

Your pre-med advisor at Cornell will help you stay on track and offer guidance tailored to your interests and goals. Make sure to engage with your advisor regularly to discuss your academic plans and receive support throughout your pre-med journey.

Best of luck in preparing for Cornell and your future in medicine!
