Questions about applying to University of California?

Hello fellow applicants! I'm currently working on my University of California application and have a few questions. Can anyone clarify the process for applying to multiple UC campuses? Also, what should I focus on in the personal statements? Would appreciate any tips!

Hello there! I'm glad you're in the process of applying to the University of California system. To apply to multiple UC campuses, you only need to fill out one application, the UC Application, which can be found at the University of California's application website.

During the application process, you’ll have the opportunity to select all the UC campuses you wish to apply to (you can apply to any or all of the 9 campuses with undergraduate programs). Keep in mind that the application fee is per campus, so be mindful of the costs when selecting multiple campuses.

As for the personal statements, the UCs require you to write four short essays out of a choice of eight Personal Insight Questions (PIQs). Each essay has a maximum word count of 350 words. When choosing which questions to answer, be sure to select topics that highlight your unique experiences and diverse interests. Essentially, these essays should paint a well-rounded picture of you, complimenting and not overlapping with the information provided in other parts of your application.

To help you write strong personal statements, here are some tips:

1. Answer the prompt directly: Make sure your response directly addresses the question being asked and provides specific examples that demonstrate your experiences and thoughts on the subject.

2. Highlight your personal growth: Focus on how you've grown and changed as a result of your experiences. This demonstrates maturity and self-awareness, which are attractive qualities to colleges.

3. Emphasize your passions and interests: Tie in your interests and passions to show how they have shaped you and contributed to your overall personal and academic growth.

4. Show, don't tell: Use concrete examples and vivid imagery to illustrate your experiences and thoughts, rather than just stating them. This enables the reader to better understand and relate to your story.

5. Proofread and revise: Make sure to proofread your essays for grammar and punctuation errors. It's also a good idea to have someone you trust (e.g., a teacher, counselor, or friend) provide feedback to help you with revisions.

Remember, your personal statements are a crucial part of your UC application, as they offer the opportunity to showcase your personality, strengths, and experiences. Make the most of this opportunity and write essays that positively represent you! Good luck with your application!
