Brown University entry requirements

Hi everyone! I've been researching Brown University and I'm really interested in applying there. Can anyone let me know what the general entry requirements are for this school? Also, does Brown value a specific type of high school course schedule like rigor or depth in a particular subject? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Hello! Brown University is a highly selective institution and has some general entry requirements for applicants. For starters, you should have a strong academic background, including taking advanced courses like Honors, AP, or IB classes. While Brown values strong academic performance, they also take a holistic approach to admissions, meaning that they consider all aspects of your application including essays, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation.

Regarding your high school course schedule, Brown does not have a prescriptive set of classes they want applicants to take, but they do value rigor and breadth. They recommend four years of English, three of mathematics (ideally including calculus for students interested in STEM subjects), three of lab science, three of history or social sciences, and at least two of a foreign language. However, these are just recommendations, and you should ultimately choose classes that align with your interests and strengths.

Moreover, Brown values applicants who can demonstrate a "spike" in their profile, which means having a highly-developed specialty or passion in a particular field. They appreciate the depth and dedication that comes with this, as it suggests you are likely to continue being successful in that area in the future.

Ultimately, aim for a balanced mix of challenging courses in different subjects, and pay special attention to the areas you're most passionate about and plan to pursue in college. Performing well academically, having strong extracurricular involvement, and showcasing your unique attributes in your application will all contribute to improving your chances of getting into Brown.

Good luck with your application!
