What coursework should I target if aiming for top 10 med schools?

Hey guys! I'm a current high school junior, and I wanna pursue a career in medicine. My dream is to get into one of the top 10 med schools in the U.S. What courses should I be taking during high school to help build a strong pre-med foundation and increase my chances of being admitted? Should I focus more on AP science classes or do electives matter as well? Any tips would be much appreciated!

Hi there! It's fantastic that you have a clear goal in mind for your medical career. Building a strong foundation in high school can be a great asset in preparing you for college and eventually, med school. Here are some recommendations for your coursework:

1. Core courses: Definitely focus on taking the most rigorous courses available in your high school, such as honors or Advanced Placement (AP) classes across the subjects of biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Top colleges expect applicants to show they can succeed in a rigorous curriculum, and this is especially important for aspiring med students. Make sure to maintain high grades in these courses as well, as having a solid GPA is critical.

2. AP science classes: While taking AP science courses isn't a strict requirement for pre-med admission, it can definitely be beneficial. Classes like AP Biology, AP Chemistry, or AP Physics demonstrate your strong science background, which med schools like to see. Also, strong AP scores can allow you to potentially earn credit for college courses, allowing you to advance in your college coursework more quickly.

3. Electives: Electives are a great way to showcase your intellectual curiosity and explore your various interests. While they won't necessarily make or break your application, demonstrating your well-roundedness and abilities, even when unrelated to medicine, can be a plus. For example, taking an elective in psychology could give you a good background on human behavior, something you'll encounter in your medical career.

4. Foreign language: Though it's not a strict requirement, proficiency in another language can be an asset on college and med school applications. Many medical schools appreciate students who can communicate with a diverse patient population.

5. Extracurriculars: While not a part of your coursework, extracurriculars will also be important in making you a competitive applicant. Engaging in STEM or healthcare activities, such as science clubs, volunteering at hospitals, shadowing physicians, or conducting research, can be useful in exhibiting your commitment and passion for the field.

Keep in mind that admittance to a top medical school doesn't solely depend on the courses you take in high school. Focusing on maintaining a strong undergraduate GPA, excelling in your MCAT, obtaining ample clinical experience, and showcasing strong interpersonal skills will also be crucial in your journey to medical school.

Best of luck with your path to becoming a doctor!
