How to get into BU?

Hi! I've been really interested in Boston University lately, and I'm a little bit stressed trying to figure out what I should focus on to improve my chances of getting in. Any current/former BU students or knowledgeable folks here have some advice for a stressed-out junior?

Hi! It's fantastic that you're interested in Boston University, and I'm here to help you with some suggestions to improve your chances of admission. Keep in mind, BU typically looks for well-rounded applicants who have excelled academically, demonstrated a strong commitment to extracurricular activities, and showcased their unique qualities through their personal essays.

1. Keep up your grades: BU is relatively selective, with strong consideration placed on GPA. Aim for a high GPA, ideally over 3.85 (unweighted), and take challenging classes such as AP, IB or Honors courses to demonstrate your commitment to academic rigor.

2. Test scores (optional): BU has adopted a test-optional policy, so submitting SAT or ACT scores is not required. If you decide to submit test scores, aim for an SAT score of around 1430 or higher, or an ACT score of 33 or higher.

3. Extracurricular involvement: BU values applicants who have engaged in meaningful extracurricular activities, so try to focus on 2-3 primary activities that you're passionate about, and try to show commitment, leadership, and impact in those areas.

4. Demonstrate interest: Attend virtual or in-person college fairs, sign up for BU's mailing list, and consider participating in a campus tour or open house event if possible. Doing so can demonstrate that you're genuinely interested in BU, which can potentially be taken into account when they review your application.

5. Write strong essays: For the BU-specific essay, you'll want to focus on how BU aligns with your personal and academic goals, and what makes you a good fit for the school. Reflect on your values, experiences, and aspirations as you craft the essay. In addition, ensure your Common App personal statement reflects your unique perspective and tells a compelling story.

6. Letters of recommendation: Request letters of recommendation from teachers and/or counselors who know you well and can speak to your academic strengths, character, and personal growth. Give them ample time to write a strong and detailed recommendation.

7. Early Decision (ED): If BU is your top choice, consider applying through their binding Early Decision program for potentially higher chances of admission. However, be aware that if you're accepted ED, you're committing to attend, so only choose this option if you're 100% sure about BU and have evaluated the potential financial implications.

Remember that college admissions are holistic, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all formula to guarantee admission. But focusing on these aspects can improve your chances. Best of luck in your application journey!
