SAT test range: What is considered a good score?

Hi everyone! I'm taking the SAT soon and I was just wondering what score range is typically considered good or competitive for college admissions? Also, how much do individual section scores matter, like Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing?

Hello! A good SAT score ultimately depends on the colleges you're aiming for, as different institutions have different expectations. That said, to give you a general idea of what's considered competitive for college admissions, here's a quick breakdown:

- A total SAT score of 1060 or higher is considered average and falls in the 50th percentile.

- A score around 1200-1240 falls in the 75th percentile, meaning you've scored better than 75% of test takers.

- A score higher than 1400 falls in the 90th percentile, placing you in the top 10% of test-takers and making you competitive for many top colleges.

- Finally, a score of 1500 or above is considered excellent and places you in the top 5% of test-takers, making you a strong candidate for very selective institutions.

Regarding individual section scores, colleges do care about your performance in both Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) sections since each measures different skills. However, each college has its preferences for the relative importance of these sections. For example, engineering programs might place a higher emphasis on the Math section, while liberal arts programs could prioritize the EBRW section. It's always beneficial to have a balanced score between the two sections, but if you're aiming for a specific major or program, it's helpful to research the colleges you're interested in attending and understand their specific requirements or expectations.

In summary, a good SAT score depends on your target colleges, and it's essential to aim for a balanced performance across the Math and EBRW sections. Regardless of numbers, though, keep in mind that colleges use a holistic approach to evaluate applications, so it's crucial to have a well-rounded profile with strong extracurricular activities and solid essays. Good luck with your SAT preparation!
