How do I choose a college major and how important is it?

Hey guys, I'm a junior and I've been thinking a lot about what I want to major in when I go to college. I have a few interests, but I'm not entirely sure what I want to study. How important is it to choose a major before applying to college? And how did you decide on your major? Thanks for any advice!

Hey there! It's completely normal to feel unsure about what to major in at this stage. Many colleges don't even require you to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year, so you'll have time to explore your interests and make a decision. In fact, it's estimated that around 75% of students change their major at least once during college. When applying to colleges, some schools may ask about your intended major, but it's usually not set in stone and can be changed later. As for deciding on a major, my child started by identifying their interests and strengths, and then researched various majors that aligned with those areas. They also took some introductory courses in different subjects during their first year to get a better idea of what they enjoyed and felt passionate about. So don't stress too much, you'll have plenty of time and opportunities to find the right major for you!
